2009 New York State History Day

On Friday, May 1, the Village of Cooperstown was transformed into a lively history museum with the addition of more than 420 middle and high school students as they gathered for the New York State History Day competition. Students from 13 regions throughout New York State presented their award-winning work reflecting this year's National History Day (NHD) theme, The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies, in the state finals held at the New York State Historical Association (NYSHA), The Farmers' Museum, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and The Otesaga Hotel. The day's events culminated in an awards ceremony at the Cooperstown High School Auditorium.

The state contest, sponsored by the New York State Historical Association, is a yearlong history education program that challenges students in grades 6-12 to produce exceptional scholarship on topics in history related to an annual theme. Students from 11 different regions throughout New York State presented their final projects in the form of dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, interactive web sites and scholarly research papers to a panel of judges. First and second place winners in each category advance to National History Day at the University of Maryland, College Park, in June, to compete with history scholars from throughout the country.

The popularity of History Day is related to the degree of ownership students feel in researching and designing their projects. "The History Day program is a natural fit for students. It gives students the opportunity to choose a research topic that they are most interested in, which not only keeps them engaged but also makes for an enormously meaningful learning experience. Students are not just looking at this as something for school, but something that matters in their own lives, said John Buchinger, Associate Director of Education.

"The New York State History Day competition is the capstone of a yearlong process. Students spend months collecting quality research, analyzing their findings, and presenting strong arguments as to how their chosen topic relates to the annual theme, 'The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.' The level of work presented at this competition is top notch, and we are extremely pleased to honor and recognize these efforts here in Cooperstown," said Tobi Voigt, New York State History Day Coordinator.
