NHD Teacher of the Year Award
National History Day is pleased to announce the 2008 Richard T. Farrell Teacher of Merit Award for innovative history teaching. The award recognizes outstanding teachers at the state level and one exceptional history teacher at the national level who will receive a cash prize during the National History Day contest in June. The eight finalists for this award will also be recognized at the national level, and each will receive a PBS video library. To be eligible, a teacher must be a participant in the National History Day program and be nominated by the state History Day coordinator. Click here for more information on this award. |

The History Channel Award
National History Day, in collaboration with The History Channel, is proud to announce the 10th annual History Channel Award for Service. The award, sponsored by The History Channel, will be presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to history education through service to the National History Day program. To be eligible, the nominee must be a participant in the National History Day program and may be a teacher, media specialist, district or state National History Day coordinator, judge or parent. Sir William Johnson Papers Available Online
The New York State Library announces the digitization of Sir William Johnson's papers. Historians and History Day students alike will find them a valuable primary source resource for colonial New York topics. Johnson, an early pioneer in the Mohawk Valley, served as colonial superintendent of Indian affairs. He was largely responsible for keeping the Iroquois neutral in the latter stages of the struggle with the French for control of North America. Click here for details! |

New York Students Shine at National History Day!
New York State Students fared very well at the 2007 National History Day competition, held June 10-14 at the University of Maryland in College Park. New York sent 46 students to the competition, and all placed well above average in their categories. Eleven entries qualified for the finals, which narrowed the hundreds of entries to the top 14 in each category. Six New York entries won top honors and special awards.

2007 New York State History Day
On Friday, April 27, various venues in Cooperstown were transformed into lively living history museums with the addition of more than 350 middle and high school students and their families from across New York State convening for the New York State History Day competition. Students from 11 regions throughout New York State presented their award-winning work reflecting this year's National History Day (NHD) theme: Triumph and Tragedy in History in the state finals held at the New York State Historical Association (NYSHA), The Farmers' Museum, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and The Otesaga Hotel. The day's events culminated in an awards ceremony at the Cooperstown High School Auditorium at 5:00 pm.
