Project Samples

The New York State History Day staff are often asked for samples of winning History Day projects. We are currently working out some issues with permissions and copyrights, and hope to offer a CD ar DVD of New York State projects soon. In the meantime, we've collected some links that you may find helpful to view past winning projects from New York and around the country.

Exhibits
  • Junior Individual Example: "Willowbrook State School: From Atrocity to Sweeping Reform" James Marlow, student at Genesis at Xaverian school in Brooklyn, took home first place at the 2007 NHD competition for his entry. The exhibit itself was visually appealing and well organized, but the key to first place was James' strong primary source research, his knowledge of the topic, and his ability to show his topic's significance in history. Also, James choice to focus on local history was a great strategy: His topic was narrow enough to be completely explored, and it gave the judges something new a fresh to learn about. Read more about James' project.
  • Junior Group Example: "The Trials and Tribulations of the River Keepers' Fight to Protect the Hudson River" In addition to placing 8th at the 2007 NHD competition, Genesis at Xaverian students Kaitlyn and Kristie Coleman also won the Rachel Carson Centennial Prize that recognizes an outstanding entry on environmental issues. Like James, Kristie and Kaitlyn tackled a smaller topic within American history. They also did impeccable research in primary sources and created a very attractive exhibit.
  • Senior Individual Example: "Rust on the Covenant Chain: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Canandaigua Treaty" Honeoye Falls-Lima High School student Michael Tarentelli won first place at the 2007 NYS History Day competition with his exhibit on a local history topic. (Are you sensing a theme here? Local topics are the way to go!) Michael was able to interview topic experts and conduct extensive primary source research. His thesis and conclusion are clearly displayed on the exhibit, which aids the viewer as they try to understand the main point of the project.
  • Senior Group Example: "Tibet and the Dalai Lama: Triumph and Tragedy in the Himalayas" Cooperstown High School Students Katie Anania and Kim Leon placed 12th at the 2007 NHD competition with this exhibit. Unlike the other examples here, Katie and Kim chose an international topic. They narrowed their topic very well and developed a strong thesis statement that clearly provided analysis related to the annual theme, Triumph and Tragedy. Despite difficulty inherent in finding primary sources on an international topic, Kim and Katie did an admirable job. Their exhibit is compelling, and has a great balance of primary source quotations, photographs, and analytical text.
Documentaries Performances
  • Junior Group Example: "The Trail of Tears: We Wept and Moved West" This group performance by Kendra Ho Ching, Lucie Wilson and Alix Roberts from Kahuku, Hawaii placed 9th in the nation at the 2002 national contest. (Note: External link takes viewers to a Google Video address.)
  • Junior Group Example: "Heart Mountain Relocation Center" This group performance from Cheyenne, Wyoming made it to the NHD national contest but did not place. The performance is focused on the Japanese-Americans Internment Camps During World War II.
