Sir William Johnson Papers now Online
The New York State Library announces the digitization of Sir William Johnson's papers. Historians and History Day students alike will find them a valuable primary source resource for colonial New York topics. Johnson, an early pioneer in the Mohawk Valley, served as colonial superintendent of Indian affairs. He was largely responsible for keeping the Iroquois neutral in the latter stages of the struggle with the French for control of North America. (Conflict? Compromise? Sounds like a good topic to us!)
The first six volumes of his papers have been out-of-print for years. Now, the complete 14 volume set, along with the "Calendar of the Sir William Johnson manuscripts in the New York State Library," is available online in PDF format from the New York State Library's digital media management system at http://purl.org/net/nysl/nysdocs/423659 . |
